1914 -18 Great War Memorial From South side

battle memorial

On the 8th December 1914 one of the main naval battles of the first world war took place in Falklands waters.

The British squadron under Admiral Sturdee defeated the German fleet commanded by Admiral Graf Von Spee.

This Monument commemorates the Battle of the Falklands, and each year on that date there is a service of remembrance.

The memorial is surmounted by a globe and ship above a wreath with anchors attached symbolising Hope and Glory. On the north and south faces symbolic tablets depict the Royal Navy in war and peace. The bronze relief on the west face symbolises Constancy.

It is believed that this war memorial is the most southerly in the world.
