At the top of the road you will see the white house with green roof, this was the original "barracks". Erected in the late 1800's to accommodate the newly arrived Greenwich and Chelsea pensioners (and their families), whilst their own houses were being built on Pioneer Row and Drury Street. Later in 1858 it was occupied by a detachment of Sappers and Royal Marines as their headquarters and Barracks, sent here to police the Colony and provide a Government labour force. Other uses for the building have been an infant school, the Falklands first public library and museum, but is now privately owned after being split into three properties, for private residential homes. On the right of the picture you will see another building with a green roof, this is the Tabernacle Free Church, built in 1891 and was a "Kit" building imported from the United Kingdom. This building because of its historical interest has a listed status for preservation. |
