Christ Church Cathedral

Christ Church ca

Note the absence of the famous trees.
Unfortunateley, these trees had to be removed as the roots were damaging the foundations of the Cathedral.
However, one may now see the building in its complete glory.

Originally Holy Trinity Church was on this site, but was destroyed by a Peat Slip in 1886 (during the winter of that year heavy rain had built up in the peat banks on the hill to the south, causing a landslide which destroyed most of the buildings in its way). Christ Church Cathedral being built in 1892.The spire is reckoned to be roughly the same size as a Blue Whale. The denomination of the Cathedral is Anglican (Church of England), and our Bishop is the Bishop of Canterbury.

Points of interest inside the Cathedral, include the actual (laid up) regimental colours of the 2nd Battalion The Parachute Regiment (one of the instrumental units who participated in the removal of the Argentine  military occupiers), Lord Shackelton's Garter Banner (believed to be the only banner held out side Saint Georges Chapel in Windsor Castle), the battle ensign of HMS Achilles from the battle of the River Plate, December 1939.

Christ Church Cathedral Sunday services are:

8.00 a.m. Holy Communion (Book of Common Prayer)

10.00 a.m. Morning Service (2nd and 5th Sundays Holy Communion)

7.00 p.m. Evening Service (4th Sunday Holy Communion)

The foundation stone of Christ Church Cathedral was laid in 1890.

The Cathedral was consecrated by Bishop Stirling in 1892.

The Cathedral was renovated prior to the centenary celebrations in 1992.

Common Questions

 What denomination is the church?

Christ Church Cathedral is the Anglican Parish Church of the Falkland Islands, South Georgia and the British Antarctic Territories.

Why is it called a Cathedral?

The status of ‘Cathedral’ is historic and is founded on the fact that the Falkland Islands were the original seat of the Bishop of the Falkland Islands, the diocese covering most of South America.

Do you have a Bishop? Do you have a Dean?

Since 1978 the Archbishop of Canterbury has held the office of both Bishop of the Falkland Islands and Dean of the Cathedral. His Episcopal Commissary is the Bishop of Dover in Canterbury, Stephen Venner, who carries the title Bishop for the Falkland Islands.

 Who lives in the Deanery?

The Deanery is the home of the Anglican minister, whose official title is Rector of the Falkland Islands and Priest-in-charge of Christ Church Cathedral.

How many hassocks (‘kneelers’) are there? And who made them?

There are about 55 hassocks. The first were stitched by local people for the Cathedral’s centenary in 1992. Since then they have been added to. Each depicts a design or picture that has a connection with the Cathedral or the Falkland Islands.
