The Windows of Christ Church Cathedral. The East Window, above the Communion Table, was given in memory of the first Bishop of the Falkland Islands, Waite Hockin Stirling. The Mary Watson Window is found to the right of the Communion Table on the south wall. It depicts Mary Watson, with her bicycle, below an image of the Archangel Raphael, patron of doctors, nurses and travelers. She was a District Nurse much loved for her service to the community. Her memorial plaque can be seen on the south wall of the nave and you may also notice the hassock which has been stitched in her memory, by her daughter. The Window on the south wall by the chancel screen reminds us of the missionary beginnings of this Cathedral and depicts Christ with the words of his great commission to the disciples: ‘Go, ye, therefore and teach all nations’. The first double Window on the south wall depicts St Peter and St Andrew. It is dedicated to the memory of John Bonner and his son Harry. The second double Window on the south wall depicts two images of Christ, the Good Shepherd and the Friend of Children, with the respective Bible verses: ‘There shall be one fold and one shepherd’ and ‘He took them up in His arms and blessed them’. It is dedicated to the memory of George Bonner O.B.E. of San Carlos and his wife, Frances Ann. The Post Liberation Memorial Window. The centre of the window has the Falklands crest with the sheep and the ship, and the motto ‘Desire the Right’. Around this you will see the crests of the Royal Navy, the Army, the Royal Air Force, the Merchant Navy, the Royal Fleet Auxiliary and the Royal Marines. All of these contributed to the Liberation in 1982. The window is crowned with the disc of the rising sun in which is set the ‘Chi-Ro’ symbol – a monogram for Christ. Three aspects of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia are represented under the crests. To the left is this Cathedral and the Whalebone Arch, representing the capital, Stanley. Lower centre is a typical Camp settlement and harbour. To the right are the mountains of South Georgia and Grytviken Church. The base section of the window shows the tri-service flag of the British Forces in the Falkland islands. The West Window, above the font, was given in memory of George Markham Dean, whose widow also donated the Cathedral Clock and Bells. In this window, Jesus is depicted in two different ways. In the first he is majestic and dignified and addresses the onlookers with the words, ‘I am the Way, the Truth and the Life’ (John 14:6). In the other, he is depicted as the Good Shepherd with crook in hand caring for his flock. The Hansen Window on the north wall above the pulpit depicts Jesus walking on the water with the words he spoke to his disciples, ‘It is I, be not afraid’. It is dedicated to the memory of Charles Hansen, who was lost at sea. |
