Liberation Monument - North View

Liberation mon

Funded by public subscription to commemorate the British Forces who liberated the Falkland Islands from Argentine Military occupation in 1982.

On the main memorial, are inscribed the names of all the British Military units that participated in the recovery of freedom to the Falkland Islands; the wall at the rear (built from stone taken from the battle sites) lists all the names of the personnel who gave their lives to Falklands freedom.

On the 14th June each year, we hold a service of remembrance and thanks for those who gave so much for our freedom.

The building to the rear (south) is the The Secretariat, this houses most of the administration of the Falkland Islands Government (our City Hall), built in 1936 (on the site of the old courthouse), later, in 1956 the building sustained a serious fire in the first floor.

General Mario Menendez, the commander of the Argentine military occupying force signed the surrender document in the upstairs of this building, thereby ending the war of 1982. The room in which this document was signed is now called the Liberation Room, and is now used as a conference room.
