Looking up (southwards) to Philomel Street

Looking up (southwards) to Philomel Street

This name was derived from HMS Philomel which was an early survey ship until 1845. During the early 20th century it was sometimes known as Con Lehan's Hill (family name of the then owners of the Victory Bar, which still stands and is situated on the 2nd block up on the right hand side). Also, at one time known as the Prince of Wales Hill - named because of a bar which used to be located on the opposite side of the road from the Victory Bar.

Looking up the hill you can see the Globe Hotel which was originally built in the 1870's by Charles Williams, and was popular with visiting seaman, which remains to this day.

On the right of the picture you will see the Jubilee Villas, named to commemorate Queen Victoria's Golden Jubilee, and built by the Dean family in 1887.

Whilst walking around the town, you are likely to spot turkey vultures - cathartes aura, especially in the close proximity of chicken runs. You might also see some of these birds with yellow tags. These tags have been attached to the birds by Falklands Conservation, to try and gain knowledge on the birds movements.
