Reservoir Road from Ross Road

resevoir road

Prior to the opening of the Panama Canal, Stanley was the main port for sailing vessels travelling from Europe to ports such as San Francisco, Callao etc before to attempting to round Cape Horn.

A fresh water supply for these vessels to replenish their stocks was stored in the Reservoir at the northern end of this road.

The reservoir is situated to the right of the picture (brown coloured fence) which is now filled in (excavated material from the King Edward Memorial Hospital) and is now a small garden. Also on this side of the road, was a jetty, and one can still see the wooden mooring posts that the ships tied up to, whilst replenishing their water supplies.

The building with the light blue roof is the King Edward VII Memorial Hospital. Originally built in 1915, rebuilt in the 1950's, and then after a serious fire in 1984 rebuilt again.

The main entrance is at Saint Mary's Walk, about 100 yards or so up the road and to the left.

The hospital comprises of 32 beds, which includes Intensive care, Maternity ward and Isolation wards. Wards are 4 bed and single rooms. There is also a full surgical theatre with consultant surgeon, anaesthetist and theatre team.

Emergency treatment is provided on a 24 hour basis.

If you are actually walking along this part of Ross Road, you will notice the white concrete lamp posts; these have on them the "old style" Falkland Islands coat of arms, together with open boats. These lamp posts date from the 1950's when Ross Road was surfaced.
