Saint Mary's Catholic Church

Saint Mary's Ch

The Apostolistic Prefecture of the Falkland Islands.

The Church is the spiritual home of the Falklands' Roman Catholic community, and was built in 1899. Generally reckoned to be a "kit" building (that is designed and fabricated, in the United Kingdom) then shipped to the Falkland Islands.

The original church still stands to the immediate rear, but is now used as a church hall. As a point of interest, this structure was originally sited at Pump Green (corner of Dean Street and Fitzroy Road) and moved to this site in 1886.

Monsignor Michael B. McPartland is the current Prefect Apostolic of the Falkland Islands and Ecclesiastic Superior of St. Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha.

Parish Priest of St Mary's is Fr Peter Norris SFO (who also serves as Officiating Chaplain to the British forces in the Islands).

The history of the present Catholic Church, in Falkland Islands, can be traced to the eighteenth centrury. The mission started in a rather cautious way but gradually developed over the years, especially under the dedicated priests and religious brothers and sisters of the Salesian Order (1888-1952) and the Mill Hill Missionaries (1952-2002.) In October 2002, the Bishops Conference of England and Wales assumed full pastoral responsibility for the Church in the South Atlantic.
