Stanley Police Station

Home of the Royal Falkland Islands Police

Police Station

Built by Royal Marines between 1870-2, with local stone, and deemed to be of classic Victorian design. Because of a shortage of building lime, "S-Ties" (as seen on the left and right hand side of the main building) and buttresses were added for reinforcement.

The cells are high and narrow, with a walled exercise yard in the rear.

Compare this building with the centre structure of Government House, and you will see it is virtually identical.

During the 1982 war with Argentina, the roof sustained considerable damage from a British missile.

The station is reputed to house it's very own ghost, with the building very recently being blessed by local clergy.

This building is currently undergoing renovation, and an extension being built on the left side of the building, which will incorporate the new Gaol.

Until quite recently, in the front grounds of the Police Station were lush and very elegant trees. Unfortunately these were very sadly cut down, and very much before the man in the street was aware of what was going on. Much public criticism was afterwards angrily directed towards the authorities who consented to this decision, as little or no consultation or consideration with the general public was attempted.

A case of "City Hall......!" again.
