Built in 1933 to commemorate the centenary of the Falklands as a British TerritoryThe Arch comprises of four jaw bones from Blue Whales. The bones arrived in the Islands in 1922 from the South Shetland Islands. The site was donated by the Falkland Islands Company Limited.Due to very severe weathering, the bones have been refurbished, with the work being carried out by Tim and Pauline Carr.Directly behind the Arch you will see a green roofed house, known as "Church House", built in 1907 for the Assistant Colonial Chaplain. It is also the birthplace in 1917 of Jack McDonald Hobley, who became famous in 1950's Great Britain as one of the world's first television celebrities. During the First World war, the house was requisitioned by the Royal Navy (renamed for the duration as H.M.S. Pursuivant) and used as a communications centre. The building is now owned by the Falkland Islands Company. |
